Colorado was still a territory when "The Colorado Institute for the Education of Mutes" was founded in 1874.

Now known as the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind the school was moved to its current campus when the founder of the city of Colorado Springs, General William Palmer, donated 10 acres for the school in 1876.
